Happy ‘Loving’ Day
by Dadda on Jun.12, 2008, under Commentary
41 years ago today, the supreme court declared VA’s anti-miscegenation law unconstitutional. This helped to overturn the last of these laws in the southern states. Our country has seen many good changes in regards to race relations in the past fifty years. I know we have a long way to go (though I can only empathize to an extent (being a white upper middle class male)). I only hope and pray that events like this one, and the fact this year we will have the first African-American presidential candidate for this years elections help to pave the way for a more equal and fair future for my son and other minorities.
Haiti’s Lost Boys
by Dadda on Mar.14, 2007, under Commentary, Mathieu
I just finished reading a very sad article about ‘Fort Dimanche,’ a Children’s Prison in the heart of Haiti’s capital.
It is sad to realize that so many of Mathieu’s peers will have a plight similar to the this:
Hardly any of the 120 boys at Fort Dimanche know when — or if — they will be released. Some were undoubtedly recruited to be child soldiers in gangs that lured them with food and shelter in return for help in kidnappings and robberies….
And maybe even more sobering that is many kids feel safer in this prison than in the streets:
The prison, for all its deprivations, can be a refuge from a hostile environment. Children have asked not to be released, Penette-Kedar said. A few parents have begged officials to imprison their children, even when they have not been accused of a crime, because they believe Fort Dimanche is safer than the streets.
I wish we could provide all these kids with a better opportunity. I wish there was a way to make things better for the less-fortunate all throughout the world.
New feature on JancoFamily.org
by Dadda on Feb.05, 2007, under Commentary
Hi Everyone,
If you have not noticed, there is a new feature on the sidebar of our site. I subscribe to several RSS Feeds (basically news stores/blogs…etc that I subscribe to). Well, the site I do this on (Google Reader) allows me to share ones I think are interesting. So the list on the right (Greg’s Reading) are posts I would like to share.
Enjoy.
Pittsburgh Drivers
by Greg on Jul.31, 2006, under Commentary
Are actually some of the kindest drivers I have ever seen. Yesterday afternoon, we had one of the nastiest storms I have ever seen since moving to the burgh. It knocked out power to our house and many in our surrounding neighborhoods. It also took out many traffic lights in the area. Noticing this I thought our drive out to the airport that afternoon would be treacherous! It was actually very pleasant!
There is a four lane road at few streets away from me. I was expecting to see a long line of people waiting to cross the four lane road. Amazingly, however, people from all four directions were stopping and letting each other through!!! This was the case at several other non-operational lights. It was almost a smoother ride than when there are working stoplights! Thanks for letting me cross, neighbor!
